We have a small garden pond, which I have previously told you of how a Heron comes and takes the goldfish. Now that we have two grandsons of an age that makes you anxious when they play in the garden, we have taken the decision to fill in the pond and plant up the area.  At the bottom of our garden we have a small woodland area, with deciduous trees, shrubs, Rhodies, Camelias, Holly bushes, and a glossy evergreen hedge of Laurel. It is starting to become rather overgrown and I think the next week or so, weather permitting will be spent letting more light into the area. Laurel is another option if you want an evergreen hedge, very low maintenance, and if after a few years the hedge is becoming too large, you will find that it is very tolerant of severe pruning. Also the glossy leaves add interest to the winter garden.
