Well thats the summer bedding in the front garden cleared out today. The tuberous begonias will be stored in the loft for next year.

Takes a bit of preparation getting the tubers ready for storing away. Today after lifting them I cut the stems back by two thirds and gently teased away most of the soil. Be careful when doing this, if you scalp the tubers you will find that the roots no longer grow in the bald patch. This is one of the main reasons for failure or at least deterioration in performance in following years. The tubers with still part of their stalks attached were laid out in seed trays and placed in the greenhouse to dry off. This can take several weeks, When they are dry you will find that the stalks more or less fall away, brush away the remaining soil, mind what I say about scalping though. When the weather starts to turn noticeably cooler wrap them in newspaper, We wrap three or four together, place in a cardboard box and store in a dark cool place, we find the loft ideal.
