Just beginning to realise that it is time that I became more environmentally friendly than at present.
Yes I have made some inroads but I realise that I still have some way to go yet. It is so easy to stick to the old ways and bury our heads in the sand.
One change that I am keen to make in the next gardening season is, to examine my use of compost. I have been reluctant to use compost for our annual seedlings, Begonias etc that is peat free, I know that this is wrong and I now intend to do something about it.
Peat bogs support rare wildlife, and also plays an important part in controlling the greenhouse effect, acts as a unique acidic preserve that helps us to find out about our social and environmental history. 94% of the UK’s peat bogs have already been destroyed, but they are still mining for it despite campaigns by environmental groups. I will no longer support this destruction.
In the garden centres look out for some of the latest peat free composts, many of the earlier attempts produced poor results, the ones that have added John Innes compost will most likely perform better especially regarding the raising of seedlings.
