Plant your Wisteria in a position where you can give some support and as it matures follow the pruning regime given in blog entry January 23rd 2007. Or perhaps you could train it to grow up an arch. Good luck.

Hi Mrs Murray
Make sure the wall where you plant your Wisteria gets plenty sunshine, Don’t plant hard up against the wall approx (12/18? away from the wall,) lean the plant towards the wall when planting. You will have to attatch horizontal wires against the wall where you can train your Wisteria, train the stems along these wires and prune as I describe in my blog. Add garden compost when planting and and keep well watered until established.
Good luck
Nicky Morrison 20 Jul 2008 at 8:49 am 3I bought 2 x 7′ Wisteria Sinensis Prolific plants this summer, which are still in the pots they were bought in.
I had intended to transfer them into bigger pots, but have read a few articles talking about their immense root system. I am now concerned that they need to be planted in the ground and away from the house and drive to avoid any upheaval due to the roots. Can they remain in pots?
One of the plants has several brown tinges on the tips of its leaves, is this a warning sign of something I’m doing wrong?
Please help as I’m clue less!

Hi Nicky
Your Wisteria is not likely to cause the damage which you fear. The leaf damage is most likely a sign that they are desperate to get out of the containers. Plant them against a sunny wall, south or west facing. Dig the planting hole about two feet away from the wall and lean the plant towards the wall. You will need to get horizontal wires attached to the wall for support, read the information regarding pruning, mix through garden compost when planting and keep well watered until established. Good luck.
