Winter weather is holding in at the moment. Looking forward to getting seriously stuck into the garden again as soon as the weather changes.

Not sure if this year we will put forward our front or back garden for the Aberdeen in bloom garden competition. Overall winner for the front garden last year was a bit of a bonus, so probably this year we will have a go with the back. At the moment I am working on the website on the link (A to Z Of Plants From our Garden) Take a look, an ongoing project where I will list every plant that we have in our garden.

Or if you are thinking of entering your own garden into a competition, have a look at the link (Our Garden) lots of pictures of our front and back garden. It may just give you some ideas, and if you like get in touch with me I would be pleased to help out.

I want to give you a little more information on a plant which I am always going on about, Begonia Flamboyant. Well it started in 1902 with the introduction of a semi double flowering canary yellow Begonia  named Royal Renaissance Helen Harmes. Followed in 1911 with RR Flamboyant, bright red with yellow centre, then finally in 1932 the threesome was completed with RR Richard Galle, beautiful semi double apricot flowers.

Very strangely this exquisite Begonia almost died out completely, possibly due to the introduction of the non stop variety which has become very popular. Fortunately growers have taken an interest in reintroducing this variety (Vale Royal Horticultural Ltd) have list of suppliers contact Dave Wales on 07748 698802.

Well as you know it is the Flamboyant that we have grown for many years, however for this coming season we have also managed to track down some Helen Harmes and hopefully next year we will manage to get a few Richard Galle. Thats all regarding Begonias for the moment and whatever your own plans for the coming season make sure you enjoy them to the full.

RR Helen Harmes
