about us
Alistair on Jul 30th 2006
My interest in gardens and gardening began as a child. My brother and myself would visit and stay over at our grandparents house regularly. We lived on the top floor of a tenement block, making the visits to grandmas house all the more special.
They had a large garden which was beautifully maintained, the days spent there were the best of my childhood.
Moving on a little more than a decade, in nineteen sixty nine Myra and I who incidentally married very young got our first house with a garden. It was a council house with a small garden, moving in with our two children who were still babies was like being given a mansion.
In 1985 we moved to our present house near the river Dee. Now we have a large garden which has given us a great deal of pleasure.
We first were persuaded in the summer of 1991 to enter our front garden into the “Aberdeen in Bloom” competition (Aberdeen south.) We were more than delighted to get placed third. Although we had been gardening for a number of years this was the point when it was to become a little more than just a hobby.
In 1992 we won “Best Front Garden” in our area. From that time up until 2005 we have had another ten firsts. One of which was “Best Front Garden” Overall Winner, and one year we received “Best Overall” for our back garden of which we were particularly proud.
(edit= 18thMarch 2009) 2006 overall winner front garden. 2007 best front garden for area. 2008 overall winner for back garden.
Our garden has also been featured in the weekly magazine ‘Garden News’ and appeared on the television programme ‘Beechgrove Garden’.
Now when our grandsons visit I find myself wondering, when you are both grown up will you reflect on the times spent at grandma and grandads.
Laurie Scotton 18 Mar 2009 at 12:07 pm 1I was very interested to come across your website. I am the Plantarea Manager for an exciting new garden centre, called The Mains of Drum, opening this spring. We are located west of Aberdeen on the A93, just next to Drum Castle; thus our name. We will stock an excellent range of plants as well as sundries, gifts and furniture. And we have a 250 seat restaraunt upstairs with views to die for! I’d like to welcome everyone to drop in and see us once we open.

Great news Laurie, we will look forward to visiting your garden centre in the Spring. Good luck with the venture. Regards Alistair.

We are looking for ways to promote our website http://www.voucheralerts.co.uk and think that your blog would not only be excellent for us to increase our exposure but also that you users would find our service useful.
I would appreciate if you could please contact me.

axelleon 17 Feb 2010 at 10:29 am 3Hello,
I came across your site looking for gardening societies or assossiations in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire. I am currently an anthropology student in Aberdeen Uni and would like to base my research proposal in the human activity of gardening and study the whole sphere of emotions and development of a human-plants relationships inherent to gardening…and much more hopefully!
Please if you are interested in participating in this research or if you know people who might help or have interesting comments to make, contact me asap. I am French and thus do not really know anybody who might lead me on this path_
Looking forward to your reply, thanks a million for any help you can give, best wishes, axelle.
