Viburnum Plicatum Mariesii.
This shrub Viburnum Plicatum Mariesii has to be one of the most outstanding shrubs which you will find for that very special sunny position in your garden.
Viburnum Mariesii 
received the RHS prestigious award of garden merit.
The eventual height is about ten feet, although information received suggests that it can take ten years to reach six feet, so obviously won’t outgrow its position too quickly. Branches grow horizontally in a tiered fashion without the need for training, pruning is unnecessary other than to tidy up and perhaps remove the occasional wayward branch.
The white showy upward facing lace cap flowers in May are borne along the length of the horizontal branches, giving a very striking and architectural appearance. The leaves in Autumn turn a reddish/purple giving a spectacular display. Best grown as a specimen shrub as the horizontal branches grow wide and would be restricted in the mixed border, which would spoil the effect of this very special deciduous shrub.

It is annoying when this happens Stefania. This is generally a free flowering shrub and if you have it placed in a sunny or partially shaded position all should be well. They tend to grow in acidic, neutral or alkaline soil. You certainly don’t want to overfeed, next Spring give your shrubs a feed of general garden fertilizer before buds start to develop. Perhaps its just one of those things and they will do well next year, if not seek further information.

I have been trying to find out why my 3 Vibernums- Plicatum Mariesii have not flowered this year. They were planted the autumn/winter before last and last year produced the most gorgeous blooms. They are growing well and producing lots of leaves but sadly no flowers this year. Should I have been feeding them do you think? It’s a mystery.

I started reading Dean Koontz way back in 1978 when on holiday with our daughters. A very busy life as a shopkeeper brought my novel reading to zero. Now retired I have even more time for the garden, blogging and reading once again. I don’t know why I have never got round to Ian Rankin, he always did seem an obvious choice of author for me. Time to do it now.
Dear Alistair, I have just discovered your weblog on the new entries to Blotanical. And, how pleased I am to have found you since you feature here what, as you say, must be one of the most beautiful shrubs available today. I think that there is a place for most if not all Viburnums but ‘Mariesii’ is so elegant that it can easily be a specimen to be seen in its own right. I have always thought of it as a ‘wedding cake’ with the flowers held proudly above the leaves. Absolutely lovely.
